TOM COCHRANE

A Canadian Music Hall of Fame inductee and committed social activist, Tom Cochrane’s devotion to the causes close to his heart is inseparable from his creative vision. Throughout his long career as one of Canada’s most celebrated musicians, Cochrane has been honoured with seven Juno Awards, a Grammy Award nomination and a richly-deserved SOCAN National Achievement Award. Yet his career has brought with it more far-reaching responsibilities and rewards than musical integrity, responsibilities which Cochrane has assumed with characteristic commitment, passion and grace.

Committed to creating positive change and global awareness, Cochrane is a long-time spokesperson and dedicated activist for humanitarian organization World Vision. Since his first, life-changing visit to Ethiopia, Kenya, Mozambique and Zimbabwe in 1990, Cochrane has traveled extensively throughout Africa with World Vision on humanitarian missions. His recent visit to Kenya inspired him to address the crisis of HIV/AIDS in Africa both on a creative level, with his song “A Prayer For Hope,” and at a political level, with his support for legislation designed to allow the distribution of generic retroviral medication.

Tom Cochrane supports get loud and War Child Canada. Other organizations and campaigns that Tom has been involved with include:

  • His commitment to supporting research into Parkinson’s disease, a disease that his father was afflicted with. The proceeds from Cochrane’s single “Just Like Ali” go towards medical research for a better understanding of the disease, and Cochrane is Honourary Chair Person for the Parkinsons Society of Canada.
  • Spearheaded the Canada 4 Asia benefit following the devastating tsumani of 2004. Following this he visited Sri Lanka with World Vision in December 2005 to assess the relief efforts.
  • His active involvement in the Make Poverty History Campaign in Ottawa in July 2005.
  • His work as a spokesperson for the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA), particularly in their campaign to ban bear farming in China.
