In an age of mindless celebrity worship, Raine Maida is an anomaly. He has yet to star in a reality TV series, lend his face to a lucrative ad campaign or create an action figure in his image. Instead, the charismatic Our Lady Peace front man, whose voice has blared from Canadian speakers for over a decade, makes exemplary use of his elevated status.

Through his long-standing partnership with War Child Canada, Maida has explored dangerous and devastating corners of the world. In 2001, Maida traveled to Iraq with his wife, Manitoba-born singer/songwriter Chantal Kreviazuk, as part of the documentary Musicians in the War Zone. Their investigation into the impact of war and sanctions on Iraqi children shook Maida to the core, and he returned to Canada humming with the desire to educate and inspire others.

Using the most powerful tool at his disposal - his music - Maida has continued to work closely with War Child for the past five years. Our Lady Peace has performed in War Child benefit concerts in Toronto and Winnipeg, and continues to take part in various War Child initiatives.

In 2004, Maida embarked on another humanitarian mission with War Child Canada, this time to witness haunting images of genocide in Darfur, Sudan. He was confronted with the region’s horrific reality of violence, famine, and disease, and was moved by the empowerment of scattered, destitute and malnourished civilians. The trip strengthened his resolve to throw all of his weight behind tackling global change at a grassroots level.

Recently Raine and wife Chantal Kreviazuk collaborated on the duet “Lebo’s River” for the War Child Canada benefit album “Help: A Day In The Life”, the proceeds from which will support War Child Canada’s international humanitarian projects for war-affected children.

Maida’s passion for social and political activism is evident in his poignant and insightful lyrics. The latest release from Our Lady Peace, Healthy in Paranoid Times, is both technically brilliant and instilled with a strong dose of the band members’ passion, depth and intelligence - a rarity that is not lost on fans or critics.

With his powerful sense of responsibility, his fearless will to take action and his seemingly inexhaustible supply of energy, Raine Maida has all the makings of a superhero. It’s a shame that he feels so strongly about the ills of consumerism, because he would make a stellar action figure.

Raine Maida supports get loud and War Child Canada. Other organizations and campaigns that Raine has supported can be found in the Our Lady Peace humanitarian biography.
